So how do you guys feel about internet speak? Does it corrupt our spelling and ability to express our thoughts clearly? Good points would be appreciated Smiley

yeah, this is what it would be if i hadn't used internet speak

It is okay, though it is annoying sometimes when people come up with they're own typos
it is an easier and faster way of typing
but if you are going to give your toefl soon then you should practice typing properly  Cheesy

LOL! Honestly, being a grammar and spelling Nazi that I am, I try as much as I can to avoid it. It doesn't really bother that much when I read it...but if its really messed up like writing "mi" instead of my and mixing up their, they're and there....it seriously pisses me off Tongue

Sometimes when in makes absolutely no difference in the length of the word it's annoying... like writing "tyme" I'm like huh? Seriously what difference did that even make?

and just to prove the Grammar Nazi-ness of me... (don't hate me, plz) it's "come up with they're their own spelling" Tongue  Gosh..I know how annoying I must be right now  Undecided

But will it really affect our day to day writing? In my opinion yes, because I've seen in first hand and sometimes without noticing it you write u, r and things like that. But it really depends if it's in a chat log/ forum or text message, since for a text message its much cheaper and quicker to type short things.

Overall, its convenient...but not advised. Sometimes it is necessary (such as passing notes in class xD and texting your friends, or when you have no time) but it's not "healthy" to use it ALL the time.

I can use these abbreviations and shorthand methods only while smsing and chatting. y refrain from using it....it helps u write faster and i think it helps to increase dexterity...it's helped me. Although it's bad if u use it all da time cuz some of my friends write  shorthand in their papers too.(sad) Even though it is understood w8 they mean they r not given marks..haha..they spend a lot of time on the messenger and facebook,no wonder im better off....so loyal to the forum...no social networking sites for me.

Personally, I find it quite annoying when it's over used. I figure, if you're gonna be on the computer for so long, why not learn to type? I stopped using stuff like "u" and "ur" all the time because once I was in an exam and instead of writing 'you' I subconsciously wrote "u"-I was so shocked from then on I basically never use it!  Grin I also find it, when someone is writing a long passage and OVER-uses it with all their this and dats, they sound like someone who has a lisp (when I read it silently in my head) and it gets on my nerves-the occasional "u" is fine with me, but when it's used too much, it gets on my nerves...

Okay sure-I'll use it when texting and maybe sometimes on MSN when I'm eating something and only have one hand-but other than that, I try to write as correctly as possible (and please point out any grammar mistakes I've made Enia  Tongue)

Why do people write lyke instead of like? It is the SAME number of LETTERS. No, it does not make you look "cool". You look like an idiot period.  Grin

So if you type so fast why don't you just put in all the letters? You probably only waste a couple miliseconds per word if you write it properly   Grin
